OEE

(Overall Equipment Effectiveness)

A standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. World-class OEE is 85%+.

MTBF

(Mean Time Between Failures)

The average time a machine runs before experiencing a failure. Higher MTBF indicates better machine reliability.

MTTR

(Mean Time To Repair)

The average time taken to repair a machine after a failure. Lower MTTR means faster response and less downtime.

Downtime

Any period when a machine is not producing due to breakdowns, changeovers, or other stoppages.

Uptime

The time during which a machine is available and running as expected.

Availability

The percentage of scheduled time that equipment is available for production. Availability = (Planned Time - Downtime) / Planned Time.

Performance

The ratio of actual production speed to ideal production speed. Accounts for slow cycles and small stops.

Quality

The ratio of good units produced to total units produced. Also called First Pass Yield.

Cycle Time

The time required to complete one unit or cycle of production from start to finish.

Takt Time

The rate at which you need to produce products to meet customer demand. Takt = Available Time / Customer Demand.

Preventive Maintenance

(PM)

Scheduled maintenance performed to prevent failures before they occur. Reduces unplanned downtime.

Predictive Maintenance

(PdM)

Using data and analytics to predict when equipment will fail, allowing maintenance before failure occurs.

Breakdown

An unplanned machine stoppage due to equipment failure requiring repair.

Changeover

The time required to switch a machine from producing one product to another. Also called setup time.

SMED

(Single Minute Exchange of Die)

A lean manufacturing methodology to reduce changeover time to under 10 minutes.

TPM

(Total Productive Maintenance)

A holistic approach to maintenance that involves all employees in maintaining equipment.

Six Big Losses

The six categories of productivity loss: Breakdowns, Setup/Adjustments, Small Stops, Reduced Speed, Startup Rejects, and Production Rejects.

Lean Manufacturing

A production method aimed at minimizing waste while maximizing productivity.

Kaizen

Japanese term meaning "continuous improvement". A philosophy of making small, incremental improvements.

CMMS

(Computerized Maintenance Management System)

Software that manages maintenance activities, work orders, and asset history.
